ACCESSORIES REPORT: “Run Wild”

I’m confident that every Fashionista from coast to coast has experienced the resurgence of the animal print and fabric trends this season in runway shows, celebrity sightings and street style. Whether it’s a cheetah print top, a fur accent on a pair of booties or a feathery hair extension, the nature girl is coming out in all shapes and sizes. When I spotted this Fashionista, I fell in love with how she combined three different animal-like accessories into one flawless, effortless outfit.

The first thing that popped out to me was that fabulously furry vest. The fur vest is not necessarily a new statement piece, though the speckled black-and-white pattern gives it a unique twist. At a closer glance, I spied something tribal hanging alongside those long brown locks. Feather earrings are one of those accessories some Fashionistas shy away from because they seem too “boho” or “hippie.” But this Fashionista was smart to almost match the color of the feather to the hue of her hair; they’re subtle but cool, and a fab addition for any occasion. To top off the whole look, whether on purpose or coincidence, her iPhone cover is a speckled giraffe-like design that ties the whole ensemble together.

Though this is a casual look fit is for any college campus, especially those as snowy as ours, feathers, fur and animal prints can be incorporated into more formal attire as well. ASOS carries tons of fun and flirty feather dresses like this one perfect for a spring formal.

Spotted: Alexander McQueen’s Spring 2011 Ready-To-Wear collection not only embodied the nature and animal trends, but also took it to a whole new level. The models were enveloped in extravagant pieces resembling monarch butterfly wings, waxy fall leaves, and masses of bird feathers.

ACCESSORIES REPORT: “Bow My Mind”

Every day until about the age of 10, my mother clipped a giant pastel bow into my hair before school. Once I was able to make my own fashion choices, I boycotted the ultra-girly accessory and refused to wear it ever again. But now that I’m older, wiser and less of a rebellious tween, I realize that my mom was actually making me more chic than ever. So when I spotted this Fashionista, I was instantly transported back to the days of frilly hair accessories and was impressed at how she transformed the classic bow into a trendy addition to her otherwise simple look. It’s an instant fix to a bad hair day or any outfit that needs a little extra oomph.

Bows unfortunately can have a bad reputation for being too fussy or prissy. But recently, major celebs like Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and Zooey Deschanel have turned bows into one of the hottest trends for this season. Besides the clip-ons, there are also bow headbands and even bow up-dos. If hair accessories aren’t really your thing, try studs, flats, belts, or sweaters adorned with this adorable embellishment.

So next time you’re headed for class and are feeling a little too plain, channel your inner Blair Waldorf and rock that ribbon like it never went out of style.

ACCESSORIES REPORT: “Haute Hardware”

There are some trends that are just so chic and timeless that they actually resurrect themselves in Fashionistas’ wardrobes just about every season. The stud fad is one of them. Although some people instantly think of ‘80s rockers and goth r punk princesses, today’s studded pieces are subtle but not unnoticeable and edgy but not over-the-edge. A first glance, this Fashionista just seems to be cozied-up in her favorite neutrals, ready for a long day at Case Library. But a second look shows that although her day might be spent typing away in a cubicle, she continues to work one of the most popular embellishments into her look. The stylish simplicity of the rest of the outfit allows the conical and square metallic studs on her booties and bracelets to steal the spotlight. Her suede Steve Madden T-Stud Flat Booties combine comfort and coolness with the moccasin-like design and the bling on the back flap. This season, pointed and rounded nail heads and even studded skulls have been seen on footwear ranging from heels to flats to over-the-knee boots. You can rock them for any occasion on or off campus.

Incorporating studs into your wardrobe does not have to be like putting on battle armor. Gentle splashes of studs down the sides of leggings, on the corners of a pair of shades, or around the rims of a couple bangles are the perfect ways to go glam with any ensemble. Metalware goes great with both neutrals and neons, like this Fashionsta’s leather arm party or this studded bracelet by Zara. To cross further into “rock chic,” try a pair of (real or faux!) leather leggings; they’ll look rad with any kind of studded accessory. ACCESSORIES REPORT: “Sole Survivor”

As one of the greatest television characters ever created (in my eyes at least), Carrie Bradshaw taught viewers to live fully, love always and most importantly, wear fabulous footwear. Miss Bradshaw would no doubt be very proud of this Fashionista, who I caught on her way to a girls’ night out. When I spotted her strutting those python pumps, I was impressed; but then when I caught sight of those iconic red soles, I almost fainted. Christian Louboutin heels are more than just a pair of shoes—they’re wearable art. The Parisian-born designer’s non-conformist ideals and attention towards women’s empowerment manifested into his fascination with shoes. No one knows better than Christian Louboutin himself that, “A woman can carry a bag, but it is the shoe that carries the woman.”His signature “Sammy red-bottoms” were actually inspired by an employee’s nail polish to add a sort of energy that he felt was previously lacking in his shoes; those signature red soles are now instantly recognizable among shoe junkies and Fashionistas all over the world.

This Fashionista is mindful not to distract from her fabulous footwear by pairing a flowy black chiffon top with waxed denim jeans. The oxblood color of her pants is not only very trendy right now, but a surprising hue that matches just about anything. Her accessories are minimal with aHouse of Harlow pentagon necklace and simple studded earrings. Wearing all solids against the grey snakeskin pumps is the right move. This ensemble is perfect for spending a night in the city with those girlfriends who will not only complement your carefully crafted outfit, but will also appreciate just how special those shoes really are. Though they are an item outside of the average college girl’s budget, Louboutin heels exude a sense of timelessness, sophistication, femininity and daring that is near impossible to find in any other footwear.

Spotted: Aside from his simpler patent, leather and python pumps, Christian Louboutin is also known for pushing boundaries with his sky-high, almost costume-like heels that any Fashionista would die to try.

STYLE GURU BIO: Rebecca Gibson

Besides being an incurable shopaholic and devoted fashion mag junkie, I am currently a junior in my third semester as a Style Guru at Colgate University in upstate New York. I am majoring in Art and Art History with a Spanish minor. Outside of the fabulous world of fashion, my top interests include dance, photography, writing and chatting with my wonderful friends. Coming the eclectic city of Chicago, I was interested in what rural Hamilton would bring to the fashion scene around campus. To my delight, the difficult weather and small town atmosphere never prevents my fellow classmates from strutting their styles all around the university.

For me, fashion is much more than the superficial, purposeless interest that it is sometimes wrongly stereotyped as. It’s wearable art that expresses individuality and creativity. I have spent the past four months studying in Sevilla, Spain, and through my European travels have been lucky enough to learn about and appreciate fashion outside of the States. My personal style definitely does not fit into one category, since it is ever-evolving and a blend of a few different styles. I’m typically characterized as urban prep meets classic chic, though I am very open to trying out new styles and combinations. I’m a sucker for anything oversized—sunglasses, watches, sweaters, you name it—as well as skinny jeans (I must own about fifty pairs), tailored blazers and sky-high wedges. I cannot wait to start sporting my spring apparel on campus, incorporating my newly discovered European styles into my articles, and more importantly capturing all of the fantastic looks flaunted at Colgate this semester!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: “To the Max”

Now that we have finally seen a streak of sunny spring days, one would think that choosing an outfit for class, a weekend getaway or a night out with friends would be a cinch. However, the winds have picked up in the North and when walking past the leaf blower man or getting caught in the gusts from a Cruiser passing by, that cute little sundress will no longer be your friend. What is a girl to do to look feminine and flirty without having technical difficulties with her favorite flowy mini dress or skirt? The solution is simple: maxi-mize.

The maxi dress is one of the hottest spring/summer trends for this year, and has been widely displayed down the runways and in storefront windows all over the country. This Fashionista nails the cool and casual look of a May afternoon with her brightly patterned ankle-length dress. Maxis with loud prints steal the spotlight of the outfit, so avoid over-accessorizing. Her beige straw sunhatand camel sky-high wedges are perfect additions that complement the dress without cluttering the look.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: “To Romp Or Not to Romp”

Even though the skies are blue, the sun is out and the first musings of summer are upon us, we just can’t deny it anymore. It is officially the most dreaded week of the semester: final exam week. Students have been posting up in the library all week and even though their study skills may be improving, their fashion sense is not. Many co-eds use finals week as an excuse to wear sweatpants and tennis shoes all day, every day to be comfortable for those long hours sitting in a cubicle. This Fashionista is the exception; she found a way to look chic and rock one of the season’s hottest trends while still studying for hours on end.

The romper made its comeback last summer, and has proven that it’s here to stay. It’s a practical one-piece to effortlessly throw on and an innovative take on the traditional sundress. Now while this Fashionista’s floral romper is the statement piece of the look, a solid-colored romper can be the perfect blank canvas to really get creative. A metallic belt, chunky bangles or color-blocked heels are just some of the wild accessories that would really pop against a black or a hot pink romper. Rompers’ versatility is their best trait since they are both class approved and perfect with wedges and a sleek blazer for a night out on the town.

I personally am a huge fan of this trend, but many of my friends complain that they are intimidated by the modern playsuit and feel that they can’t “pull off” the romper look. However, since most cinch at the waist, or can be accentuated with a skinny belt, the romper highlights the most flattering part of the body creating that perfect hourglass shape. You can even add a simple, oversized cardigan, like this Fashionista did, to make the ensemble even cozier. Just lace up a pair of gladiator sandals or neutral-colored oxfords, and Voila! You just made an easy, casual and adorable outfit perfect for studying or a study break.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: “Flower Child”

Calling all music festival junkies! April kicks off the string of summer concerts with Coachella, and with Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza just around the corner, modern hippies have been popping up more and more all over campus. Inspired by gypsies, ethnic patterns and the 60’s and 70’s hippie scene, bohemian chic is one of the hottest trends for this spring and summer. Although this style can be intentionally messy, the key is to find a balance to create a cool yet cohesive look. I envision any girl rocking the ethereal hippie trend to be carefree and casual, making a statement with accessories like feathers, beads and fringe against understated apparel. This Fashionista did just that.

When I spotted her adorable white floral crown, I had to stop to get a better look at the rest of her ensemble. The black romper and white Jack Roger sandals are both simple and stylish to really allow the flower headband to shine. This style reminds me of celebs like Vanessa Hudgens and Nicole Richie who work this look year round and for any occasion. They take very free approaches to this boho vibe, so don’t be afraid to mix and match prints, textures and accessories. Although this Fashionista already nailed this look, adding a fringed vest or a braided leather belt would not have overpowered the rest of the outfit. All she needs now is the peace sign hand gesture to finish off her hippie chic!
